There is no other relationship that is more important to a child than the one they share with their parents. When children have a positive relationship with their parents, they understand more about the world they live in. As they develop and grow, they also depend on their parents for security and love. A healthy parent-child relationship determines how children will handle their relationships in the future.
To build a positive relationship with your children, spending quality time with them and providing a nurturing home environment is always helpful. Whether you are at home or go out of town for a holiday and stay in one of those big houses for rent, it is the quality of time you spend together that matters. Parenthood does not come with an instruction manual, and you may make mistakes along the way. However, working on making improvements to your relationship will strengthen the bond you have with them.
Quality time is essential
Your children will always want to spend as much time as they can with you. They feel most secure with their parents and look forward to that special time when they have your full attention. It can be challenging, especially if you have a full-time job that keeps you out of the home for most of the day. However, what matters is that the time you spend with them, no matter how limited, is quality time. This means that you are focused on what they have to say and involved in whatever activities they enjoy. Family dinners together make them feel a sense of belonging, surrounded by the people who love them the most.
Don’t be embarrassed to show affection
No matter how old we get, touching, hugging, and other displays of affection are always appreciated. Children, in particular, love to feel their parent’s touch. It makes them feel secure in your love. As they grow older, they count on your loving touch and hugs to comfort them when they feel down. It doesn’t matter how many times in a day you show your children that you love them. The more they feel your loving touch, the happier they are. In the same token, never hesitate to verbalise your love. Tell your child you love them as often as you can. They can never get enough of that.
Set rules
You may think that children do not like rules, but in reality, they do. Children want to know that their parents care for them enough to set rules for their safety. They need to have guidance and direction that only you, as a parent, can provide them. You must explain these rules clearly and have them know why they should be followed. When they are broken, there must also be consequences. Concerning setting rules, you and your spouse must always stay united with decisions, so your children do not get confused.
Your children depend on you to keep them safe and secure. There is no one else who can care for them the way you do. Build up a strong relationship with your children, and they will be forever grateful.
